6 Fun & Interesting Chiropractic Facts List

You may know your chiropractor as someone who helps you when you’re struggling with back or neck pain, scoliosis, or other spinal concerns.

We certainly do that, but there’s more to know about chiropractic care. The practice has a rich history, some notable patients, and much more!

Here are six interesting and fun facts about chiropractic that I bet you didn’t know. Let’s dive in!

Chiropractic Care Began in 1895 in Iowa

The inventor of chiropractic care was Daniel David Palmer, who proposed the practice in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa. Palmer believed that spinal adjustment would have a positive ripple effect, helping heal many other parts of the body.

The word is a combination of the words cheiros and praktikos (meaning “done by hand”.) Today, chiropractic a well-established practice around the world. Palmer’s College of Chiropractic is still one of the leading schools teaching the science.

Chiropractors Get Thousands of Hours of Training

Unfortunately, some people have the mistaken belief that chiropractic care isn’t scientific and that it doesn’t require rigorous training.

Quite the contrary! Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) go through a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom time, lab, and clinical internships. The result is a doctoral graduate program that takes a full four years to compete.

All 32 National Football League Team Use Chiropractors

Athletes benefit especially much from chiropractic care, a fact that’s recognized throughout professional  sports leagues. For instance, the NFL uses chiropractors to help athletes boost performance, recover from practice and games, maintain wellness, and treat injuries.

Chiropractors can also help athletes improve their range of motion, helping to prevent injuries. This kind of care isn’t just about treatment, it’s about prevention as well!

One of the Top Chiropractors Was Blind

Chiropractic can be practiced by a wide range of people, including people with certain disabilities. Dr. Charles Robinson Johnson was born in a mining camp and was accidentally blinded at age 27. He graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1918 at the age of 39, the first blind DC in history.

He went on to become one of the most successful practitioners in history as well. His skill and excellent results attracted hundreds of patients per week. He practiced for 25 years in Peekskill, NY, and is known as “the man who made Peekskill famous.”

Never Let Your Untrained Friend “Adjust” You

Chiropractic isn’t just “popping your back.” It’s a scientific process that requires thousands of hours of training. If you have an untrained friend who wants to “help you out,” they may actually hurt you very badly.

In 2001 a man in India developed severe spinal cord and brainstem problems after receiving a neck adjustment from his barber. Adjustments aren’t as easy as they look – leave them to the professionals!

Sometimes Chiropractors Need Chiropractic!

Giving care through the day, week after week can be hard on a doctor’s body. DCs have to make sure they take good care of themselves, which includes doing stretches, staying active, eating well, and getting their own chiropractic treatments.

There’s no one who doesn’t benefit from this type of care, including chiropractors themselves.
